Oral history interview with Harold Mullins, 1976 June 2 / conducted by Joy Ward.

Hal Mullins talks about his experiences as a soldier at Fort Benning during the summer of 1942. He focuses on the soldiers' activities during their free time, especially excursions into Phenix City and Columbus, and how they spent their money in Phenix City. He discusses the reasons the soldiers went to Phenix City, as it was well known at that time for liquor, prostitution, gambling, and nightclubs. He describes some of the more popular nightclubs, such as Beechie Howard's and Club 241, and some of the entertainment. He also talks about the bad feelings that developed between Fort Benning and the police and some civilians in Columbus due to soldiers frequenting Phenix City, and the pontoon bridge that the Fort Benning authorities built to provide direct access from the base to Phenix City without going through Columbus. He shares a story about General Patton bringing tanks into Columbus to get some soldiers out of jail.
